Anointing by the Spirit of the L-rd
There is the only one recipe in the Bible for the oil of anointing. It is found in Exodus 30:22-25. This is the recipe of the L-rd. "Moreover, the L-RD spoke to Moses, saying, Take also for yourself the finest of spices: of flowing myrrh five hundred shekels, and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, two hundred and fifty, and of fragrant cane two hundred and fifty, and of cassia five hundred, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin. You shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil."
Why these particular ingredients? I believe that G-d's word is always important and that in every detail, He teaches those who are willing to hear His voice.
Why these certain ingredients for the Holy Anointing Oil? Is there more than meets the eye of the quick reader? Of course! To learn of the deeper things of G-d, one should read His word as He spoke it. So, let's look at the meaning of the very words used in the Hebrew.
MYRRH Hebrew Mar, which means bitter. It is the primary ingredient after the carrier oil, and its highest value is to preserve the aroma of the other scents.
CINNAMON Hebrew Kinamon, means upright. Although there is twelve times as much myrrh as cinnamon, this is the dominate fragrance. Likewise, as we live uprightly, the bitterness of the world has no rule over us.
CALAMUS Hebrew Kaneh, which means to redeem. It is often called "sweet cane" because of its aromatic smell as it grows. Our redemption is sweet yet our lives should be lived a fragile as a cane so as not to offend those who may enjoy our fragrance.
CASSIA This plant grows only at extreme high altitudes and produces a lovely purple flower. The Hebrew word is Kiddah, which means to bow the head. So should we walk in humility even though we are enrobed in royal robes and seated in heavenly places.
Everyone likes to be anointed with oil; especially oil that is ordained by G-d Himself as “His holy anointing oil forever.” But better than being anointed with oil is to be anointed by the Holy Spirit and I believe that this oil recipe is to be a key to teaching us about the character of His Holy Sprit and an example to us forever.
The Presence of the Holy Spirit within us is the only thing that can preserve our G-dly nature and allow us to overcome the bitterness that we deal with all the time.
The fragrance of cinnamon that is the dominant aroma is what reminds us of the uprightness that empowers us to walk in the Spirit. It is only ours by the indwelling of the Ruach Elohim (Holy Spirit). The calamus reminds us that only by the Spirit of the Living G-d can we be dead to ourselves and yet still alive in Him. And the beautiful purple flower of the cassia is to remind us that we are indeed seated in heavenly places by His Spirit.
This blend is all about G-d, not about any manmade recipe or people-pleasing smell. It is ordained by G-d and sanctioned for the use of those who minister to Him.
Although verse 33 clearly forbids it to be used in a common fashion, we believe that as followers of the Most High G-d who trust in His Messiah, Y'shua, that we have become Priests unto the L-rd. This very special oil should be used only by those who count themselves among the Priesthood of Believers. Upon whom should it be used? What does the Word of the L-rd say?
Exodus 30:33 warns that 'Whoever shall mix any like it or whoever puts any of it on a layman shall be cut off from his people." The word used for "layman" is the Hebrew word pronounced zur. It is a primary root word that means, according to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, "to be a stranger, adulteress, alien, another, enemy, estranged, foreign, foreigner, illegitimate, layman, outsider, satisfied, strange, strange thing, stranger, turned away, unusual. to be loathsome."
This certainly does not describe His elect within the Body of Messiah, but rather those who are outside of His community of faith. The L-rd tells us "you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to G-d, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." 1 Peter 2: 9
So, this special Holy Anointing Oil is for you to use as you minister and pray for those who are within the Body of Messiah; and it is the only such oil proscribed by the L-rd for just such a purpose.
In researching the recipe, we committed to use only the finest, hand pressed olive oil from Mt. Carmel, as was used in ancient times in the Temple. To get this was easy; I live on Mt. Carmel, so I went to the man I had been buying oil and olives from for four years. Abu Yoseph was, in 1967, the General of the Israel Defense Force Paratroopers. His men took the Old City of Jerusalem from Jordan and returned it to Jewish hands for the first time in 2000 years. At his command, no longer is Jerusalem trodden under the foot of the Gentiles.
Then, I went to work to locate the other ingredients. Since I wanted to make this as Moses did, I wanted everything to come from the Holy Land. Imagine my surprise to learn that at no time in history have ANY of these other four ingredients ever been native to Israel.
No, the L-rd ordained that His special anointing would only be found when the carrier oil from Israel was blended with the spices from the nations. He has been trying to tell His people about coming together in this way for thousands of years, it seems. So now, finally, some of us have realized that we, in like manner, as Jews and Gentiles, have been blended together to become One New Man, and that is where the anointing is.
The basis of His anointing is His Sprit. This oil is only a reminder of His empowering us to live in unity. This is His desire and His plan for us that He teaches us at every opportunity and throughout His instruction to us.
